hitoko ueyama burke
Born in Kobe and raised in Tokyo.
She had a dream to be a pianist when she was a little girl, but she found herself more interested in looking at beautiful photography books.
She was introduced to an art director by her uncle who was a producer in the advertising field. Then she was pursuaded to be his design assistant after graduating from college. She learned design on the job working for many top-notch clients in Tokyo.
She started thinking about going to New York to study design.

After winning the invitation of Olympic games to Nagano in which she was working as a Graphic Designer, in early summer, 1992, she flew to New York alone.
Three months passed and her dearest father passed away. Even though she went back to Tokyo not knowing what to do with her future then, she decided to stick to the original plan to go to New York after spending with her family in Japan for two months.
She studied at SVA, majoring in Graphic Design and earned a BFA.
When she was in college, she worked as a design intern at New Yorker Magazine whose chief editor was Tina Brown at that time.
After graduation, she became an Art Director for a company where she designed movie titles and posters. She worked for Woody Allen, Hal Hartley, and Abel Ferarra who were New York based movie directors.
Spending several years as a Senior Graphic Designer at harmon design, she is now a freelance designer.
In September of 2006, she established her own brand line with her name, hitoko u.b. new york. Her first work is a series of 100% silk scarves.
From the 1990's, she also started writing essays. She has published two books.
She is writing articles for Japanese newspapers about raising kids in New York.
She is married with three kids and lives in Westchester, New York, with her New Yorker husband and their kids. |
